With time our skin changes. The amount of collagen and elastin decreases. As well, the gel that the collagen and elastin is suspended in, known as hyaluronic acid, also diminishes. This causes loss of tissue volume and results in deepening of furrows and loss of lip volume. Dermal fillers such as Restylane and Juvederm are clear gels that contain hyaluronic acid that is synthesized in the laboratory.

There is no animal protein present in either Restylane or Juvederm and because of this, the risk of allergic reaction is exceedingly low. These products are very safe and can be used without the need for skin testing.

Restylane and Juvederm are injected with a fine needle just under the surface of the skin. The hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Juvaderm is almost identical to the body's own. Therefore, it is integrated into normal tissue and acts as a volume expander when the body's own hyaluronic acid has decreased. Restylane and Juvederm are used to smooth out wrinkles and facial folds and to fill out lips. Restylane and Juvederm can also be used to treat acne scars.

Restylane is available in three different forms: Perlane, Restylane and Restylane Fine Lines. Perlane, the thickest of the three gels is injected slightly deeper into the skin and is used to improve deeper wrinkles. Restylane, of intermediate thickness is used for more superficial wrinkles and occasionally for the lips to add volume and definition to the lip line. Restylane Fine Lines, the thinnest of the three products is used for very superficial lines such as those around the mouth and is injected very superficially.

Juvederm Ultra Plus is used to improve deeper wrinkles and to restore volume. Juvederm Ultra is used for more superficial wrinkles.

The hyaluronic acid in Restylane and Juvederm is eventually reabsorbed and therefore the benefits are temporary. The duration of benefit varies from person to person. In general, Perlane and Juvederm Ultra Plus have the longest duration of effect, Restylane Fine Lines the shortest. Most people choose to have their treatment "topped up" 3-6 months after the initial treatment, before the effect wears off completely.

Mild swelling and redness often occurs after treatment with these products. This lasts for a day or two and is improved by applying cold gel packs to the affected areas. Mild bruising is less common and can generally be covered up with make-up. Patients generally return to normal activity the same or the next day.
